Meet this month’s Owtlaw
Bro. Jace Smith came to Iota looking for more than letters. He was looking for brotherhood, purpose and a circle of men committed to becoming better versions of themselves.
Today he splits his time between helping leaders grow at a major firm and building his name as an independent artist. His first headlining show hits Chicago on November 5.
“Family is not always defined by blood.”

The Interview
In His Words
Why did you pursue Iota?
I was looking for more than just a fraternity. I was looking for brotherhood, purpose, and a community of men who were committed to becoming better versions of themselves. What attracted me was Iota’s unique history, forming in the 60’s, and the spirit of the Founders.
The motto, “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One,” still speaks to me today. We should honor what came before us while continuing to create something meaningful for those who come after us.
How has being an Iota contributed to your life?
The greatest gift Iota has given me is brotherhood. I don’t necessarily have the closest relationships with my biological brothers, but I’ve learned that family is not always defined by blood. The Bible says, “A friend sticks closer than a brother,” and that has become meaningful to me through Iota.
My brothers have provided friendship, encouragement, accountability, and a sense of belonging. Iota has also challenged me to think about what it means to lead, serve, and represent something bigger than myself.
Your most memorable moment as an Iota?
Attending my first Conclave. There was something powerful about being surrounded by so many brothers from different chapters, backgrounds, and walks of life, all connected by the same letters. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the legacy the Founders created and the responsibility we have to keep building on it.
What are you up to now?
Professionally, I’m growing as a strategic learning partner for a major firm, helping leaders unlock their greatest potential. Outside of my career, I’m a singer-songwriter and guitarist developing my identity as an independent artist. One of my proudest recent accomplishments was releasing my first EP, “Still Standing.”
What goals are you pursuing?
I’m working on my craft. I have my first headlining show on November 5th here in Chicago, and I’m preparing to release a single and my next project in early 2027.
What would surprise your bros?
I played sousaphone from sixth grade all the way through my senior year of college. Some brothers know me today because of my music, but they may not realize how far back that journey goes. I’m also a professional voice actor and certified life coach.
A great success or challenge?
Learning how to keep moving forward regardless of what life puts in front of me. I’ve experienced loss, transitions, and uncertainty, and moments when I had to redefine what success meant. But I’m still standing. That’s what makes the title of my first EP so meaningful. It represents resilience.
